Surgery 4.0: conducted the first augmented reality guided operation
This is the first operation in the world in which the surgeon wears an augmented reality viewer that adds essential information about the patient to reality and guides them through the operation. The new generation visor is the result of a European project coordinated by the University of Pisa and which sees the University of Bologna as the partner responsible for the clinical trial.
We did it! It’s a great pleasure for us to announce that the first surgical operation in the world guided by an augmented reality system has been successfully done.
In early 2020, the maxillofacial intervention was conducted in Bologna, at Policlinico Universitario S. Orsola, by Dr. Giovanni Badiali, coordinator of the clinical trials of the VOSTARS project, using the newly developed visor. The system was used for guiding the cutting task during the intervention.
In about three years, VOSTARS will be commercially available and it will be possible to use it for different surgical interventions. In the near future, VOSTARS will be tested also in ENT and neurosurgical interventions.
